The big chop – getting a pixie cut ๐Ÿ’‡๐Ÿผ

The woman who cut my hair told me I was brave, but really, this wasn’t my first rodeo.

I first got a pixie cut my freshman year of college. It was something I’d always wanted to do, and against the advice of several friends and family members, I finally took the plunge and chopped it off. I absolutely loved the haircut, but during the winter of my sophomore year I began growing it out. I missed the elaborate braids I had mastered growing up, and having the option to curl or straighten my hair for events. I also just have a tendency of getting bored if I have the same hairstyle for too long. So, I endured the growout process for the last two years and was happy with my midlength hair until a few months ago. I started to get nostalgic and swiped through old Facebook photos of my cropped hair, and really began to miss it. It also just seemed like a practical choice: I’d soon be graduating and getting a full time job, and I know I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time doing my hair each morning. But here’s the thing, ladies. Short hair rocks. Let me count the ways:

  1. It’s wash and go. Especially since my hair is pretty thick, it used to take almost an hour to blow dry, and then another hour to curl or straighten. Now, my hair air dries in 30 minutes, I throw in some pomade, and walk out the door.147B4C76-EAC5-421A-BFB8-FE3B1F8F4C78
  2. No shedding. This is arguably the worst thing about long hair. On every article of clothing, there would always, always be three or four hairs just hanging out. And if you picked them off, there would somehow be five more that appear moments later. With short hair, this doesn’t happen. It’s like magic.
  3. It can keep your hair healthier. With my hair this short, I don’t use any heat on it. No curling, straightening, or blow drying. This helps keep my hair stay so much healthier. Plus, the frequent trims get rid of any split or dead ends that might still be there.
  4. It saves you money. The long, thick hair I used to have meant that I had to restock my hair products every few months. Now, the amount of shampoo and conditioner I use is miniscule.
  5. It’s out of the way. You don’t have to pull your hair aside when drinking from a water fountain, or worry about it getting in your eyes or mouth when the wind is blowing. You don’t realize how often your hair gets in the way until suddenly it’s not in the way anymore.
  6. It showcases your face. This is the big one. When I was looking back on the old photos of me with short hair, I was struck by how my features stood out. My neck looked longer, my eyes looked bigger, and all of the angles of my face looked more pronounced. Short hair is liberating because there’s nothing hiding or distracting from your face; it forces you to really get comfortable with your appearance.

For all of those reasons but especially the last, I would encourage everyone to try a short haircut at least once in their life. There are different styles of pixies and other short haircuts that can honestly work for any face shape, and the process of growing it out really isn’t as bad as you might think. (But who knows, maybe you’ll love it and not even want to grow it out.)

I am already loving having my short hair back. I also feel that this haircut makes me look more mature, polished, and professional, which is exactly the look I’m going for during my job interviews! In conclusion…

pixie cuts: 10/10 would recommend.

(P.S. I am aware that my eyelashes are like literal bird wings in these photos. I did my makeup for a different, group photoshoot that day and thought I might as well make the most of a full face of makeup and take some photos of my own!)

    1. Thank you so much! There’s definitely pros and cons to all hairstyles, but I think it’s great to experiment and change things up. Your hair looks beautiful too! โ˜บ๏ธ
